San Felipe 250

Householder Trophy Truck at San Felipe 250
Live drawing for start positions Feb. 13 at SCORE-San Diego for 27th MasterCraft Safety Tecate SCORE San Felipe 250. Reaching legendary status in its first 39 years, SCORE International has launched a new era in 2013 as businessman/racer Roger Norman has taken over as owner of the world’s foremost desert racing organization which begins its 40th anniversary year next month with the 27th Annual MasterCraft Safety Tecate SCORE San Felipe 250 desert race.
The live drawing for starting positions, by class, for the season-opener will be held next Wednesday night (Feb. 13) at 7 p.m. at the SCORE-San Diego race shop. The drawing will be broadcast live on the internet during a special Dirt Live episode on the official SCORE website at www.score-international.com.
Entries from across the globe, including many of the world’s top desert racers are entering in time for Wednesday’s start draw. The race itself will be held March 8-10 along the azure waters of the Sea of Cortez in San Felipe, Baja California, Mexico.
With entries accepted up to race morning, nearly 225 entries from over 15 US States and 10 countries expected to enter the race and competition will be held in 40 Pro and 7 Sportsman classes for cars, trucks, motorcycles and ATVs in the popular ‘spring break’ race.
The SCORE Desert Series will be visiting Mexico for the first of three annual SCORE Baja races in 2013.
The start draw for the season opener of the 2013 SCORE Desert Series will determine the starting order within each of the various classes in the elapsed-time race.
While SCORE Trophy Trucks, the featured SCORE racing division for 800-horsepower, unlimited production trucks have had assigned numbers since SCORE founded the unique class in 1994, all classes in the new SCORE will have annual assigned numbers. Also for the first time in its history, SCORE is accepting racer registration exclusively online, also through the SCORE website.
“SCORE has a rich tradition of exhilarating competition, magnificent race courses and memorable adventures in Baja and this year’s MasterCraft Safety Tecate SCORE San Felipe 250 will help us begin our great adventure as caretakers of this international motorsports treasure,” reflected Norman as he diligently maps out his strategy and methodology for the new SCORE International.
“This year’s race course will be fast and challenging and embody all of the elements of difficulty that racers from around the globe have come to know and admire. Together with our passionate racers and committed sponsors, SCORE will celebrate its 40th season in 2013 by forging a new frontier together for SCORE and for our cherished sport.”

PRE-RACE SKED…

The pre-race Manufacturer’s Midway and tech inspection of the vehicles in the race will be held on Friday (March 8) from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on the picturesque Malecon, flanked by the Sea of Cortez on one side and the popular restaurants and night clubs of San Felipe on the other. Racer registration will be held from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Friday (March 8) at the Hacienda Don Jesus Hotel.

TOP 12 DRAWING…

A unique part of Wednesday’s drawing will be the special drawing for the top 12 finishers from the nearest previous SCORE Baja race entered in the current race in both SCORE Trophy Truck and the unlimited Class 1. For this race it will be the top 12 finishers in each class from last November’s 45th Tecate SCORE Baja 1000. After those groups are drawn with the same driver of record as last year, the remainder of the entries in each class will be selected for their respective starting positions after the first group in each class.
The top 12 finishers in SCORE Trophy Truck from the 2012 Tecate SCORE Baja 1000 were: B.J. Baldwin, Las Vegas; Mark Weyhrich, Troutdale, Ore.; Ryan Arciero, Foothill Ranch, Calif.; Dan McMillin, La Mesa, Calif.; Steven Strobel, Clarks, Neb.; Andy McMillin, San Diego; Bryce Menzies, Las Vegas; Gus Vildosola, Mexicali, Mexico; Nick Vanderwey, Phoenix; Sergio Salgado, Mexicali, Mexico; Pete Sohren, Glendale, Ariz. and Juan C. Lopez, Tecate Mexico.
In the unlimited Class 1, the top 12 finishers from the 2012 Tecate SCORE Baja 1000 were: Luke McMillin, El Cajon, Calif.; Ronny Wilson, Long Beach, Calif.; Clyde Stacy, Bristol, Va.; Jon Walker, Guam; Nils Castillo, Westlake Village, Calif.; Tony Miglini, Dallas; Travis Chase, La Crescenta, Calif.; Tom Koch, Ridgecrest, Calif.; Brett Lenk, Costa Mesa, Calif.; Cody Parkhouse, Long Beach, Calif.; Monica Greenhill, Crowley, Texas; Rudy Cortez, Las Vegas.

NORMAN NOTES…

Norman, 49, a Tecate SCORE Baja 1000 overall winner himself, acquired ownership of the world-renown SCORE International on Dec. 20, 2012 from Sal Fish, 73, the iconic godfather of desert racing who ran SCORE for 39 years.
As a hotel/casino owner in northern Nevada, business developer and a champion racer himself, Norman re-started the High Desert Racing Association, (HDRA) in 2011. HDRA was highly regarded when it was active originally in the 1980s and early 1990s.
Norman is a Dirt Live regular with his ‘Pit Stop with Roger’ segment.

HISTORYonics…

The season-opener of the 2013 SCORE Desert Series, the MasterCraft Safety Tecate SCORE San Felipe 250, annually provides a greater economic impact to San Felipe than the popular six-week-long ‘Spring Break’.
The race began in 1982 and was not held between 1985 and 1989, the first five years of the seven-year combined High Desert Racing Association-HDRA/SCORE Desert Series of US and Baja races. It has been held consecutively each year since 1990.
In its first 26 years, the race has been held in San Felipe all but 2007 when political issues forced a last minute move by SCORE, starting it in Ensenada and finishing it in Santo Tomas. Ironically, 2007 saw a race-record 394 starters and a race-record 288 finishers even though the race was moved and the course changed just 10 days before the event. The records when the race actually started and finished in San Felipe are 341 for starters in 2006 and 220 for finishers, also in 2006.

ON THE BAJAscope
In its 40th year as the world’s foremost desert racing organization in 2013, the three-race 2013 SCORE Desert Series, with all three massive special events held in Baja California, Mexico, starts with the 27th MasterCraft Safety Tecate SCORE San Felipe 250. Both starting and finishing in Ensenada, the other two events will be the 45th Tecate SCORE Baja 500 (May 31-June 2) and the 46th Tecate SCORE Baja 1000 (Nov. 14-17).

WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP OF DESERT RACING
The 2013 SCORE Desert Series will also be part of the quickly-evolving World Championship of Desert Racing, which will combine points accumulated in the three SCORE Baja races along with points earned from three of the four-race 2013 HDRA Series, all held in the United States. Both the SCORE and HDRA series will crown their own individual class and overall point champions as well with a bonus purse for those racers who qualify for the World Championship of Desert Racing points bonus purse program to earn a desert racing World Champion title.
With a growing total, for the inaugural World Championship of Desert Racing bonus purse, an official total of $45,000 has been posted to date from new SCORE sponsors Amber Racing Services ($25,000), King Shocks ($10,000) and Rigid Industries ($10,000). For classes with at least five starters in each qualifying race in 2013, the World Champion titles will be decided on combined points from the three SCORE races and the three HDRA races with the bonus purse paid using the same formula based on total purse and number of starters in each class as is used currently for each SCORE race.
