Team X-raid 1st Place at Abu Dhabi Desert Challenge 2010
1st Place for Leonid Novitskiy and Andreas Schulz in Abu Dhabi Desert Challenge 2010, the opening round of the FIA Cross-Country Rallies World Cup and FIM Cross-Country Rallies World Championship X-Raid winning the Abu Dhabi Desert Challenge title for a third consecutive year driven by three different pilots since 2008. X-Raid’s Tina Thörner navigated successfully for Qatari Nasser Al Attiyah in 2008 and Frenchman Guerlian Chicherit in 2009, while Andy Schulz was co-driver for Leonid Novitskiy this year. Leg 1: Al Dhafrah toTal Mureeb –286km The desert special stage kicked off from the Al Dhafrah plateau and headed into Abu Dhabi’s Empty Quarter where it was reported that heavy clammy heat made for uncomfortable conditions and loose sands marred visibility. x-raid’s Leonid Novitskiy takes lead on Abu Dhabi Desert Challenge. Heavy heat and loose sand add to tough conditions.
Leg 2 Humeem – 305.30km The 305km stage threw in another bout of hot heavy weather and mixed fortunes. Novitskiy, who is out to retain the title for Team X-Raid following a
spectacular performance from Guerlian Chicherit in 2009, continued to extend his lead at his nearest competitors. With Novitskiy flying through the various passage controls, Mark Powell, Laurent
Rosso, Abdulla Al Heiraz and Abdulbari Bin Sougat began swapping places in a contest that matched the rising temperatures around the Tal Moreeb area. Just after the first service stage Al Heraiz experienced a gearbox problem that pulled him from the day. Leonid Novitskiy extended his overall lead in the Auto category of the Abu Dhabi Desert Challenge gaining a wide margin over his nearest rival Laurent Rosso on Monday.
Leg 3 Nissan Stage – 391km Leonid Novitskiy and his co-driver Andreas Schulz were able to increase the lead at the end of day three. “Abu Dhabi’s Empty Quarter is not so easy to master, but my lead is allowing me to respect the terrain and navigate the sands very well,” Novitskiy said.
