The Dakar

Dakar Rally - First run in 1978 the Paris-Dakar Rally became recognized as the toughest marathon rally "off-road" desert race event, also called a "raid" or rally raid. Created to push man and machine to their limits and beyond,the Dakar became the ultimate equalizer in off-road motorsport. Globally observed with daily TV and event coverage and race reports attracted the event motorcycle and car manufactures to test products and showcase their strength and durability. Covering 1000's km of some of the most inhospitable terrain known on this planet, the Dakar Rally is renowned for its grueling conditions. Competitors face endless miles of rock-strewn, pot-holed roads, tracks and river beds, mountains, shifting sands and desert winds. Since the inception in 1978 the Paris -Dakar Rally started from Paris, France, to Dakar, Senegal. 1996 and 1999 rallies started from the Spanish city of Granada and by this time the race was becoming known simply as The Dakar. 2003 The Dakar started in Marseille going to Sharm el-Sheik, Egypt. 2005 the rally went from Barelona to Dakar. 2006 - 2008 the start was scheduled from Lisbon going to Dakar Due to security threats in Mauritania, 2008 the rally was cancelled. The 2009 Dakar Rally was run in South America (Argentina and Chile). It was the first time the race took place outside of Europe and Africa. It has stayed in South America from 2009 to the present / upcoming Dakar 2019, held striktly in Peru.
