Electric vehicles in 2012 edition Baja 1000

They call it the most challenging automobile race in the harshest racing conditions on the planet: the Baja 1000 in Mexico. The event organizer has announced a new challenge: develop solar-powered electric vehicles to compete in next year’s race. Organizer SCORE and Redstone Energy Group aiming for the best and brightest electric vehicle and solar technology fields to work with racing teams to develop an electric-powered “EVPV” Baja race vehicle with battery charging provided by solar power. The organizers hope the challenge will serve as a catalyst for developing the clean technologies of the future and, in turn, help reduce U.S. dependence on fossil fuels. Racing has always translated to big advances on the highways.

“The goal is to apply technology and ingenuity, at which our nation excels, to create world-changing results,” said SCORE President & CEO, Sal Fish in announcing the new car-racing division and challenge cup.
“By demonstrating that the technology can maneuver the rugged terrain of an off-road racecourse for 1,000 miles, this will show the world that this technology is more than ready for use in typical urban commuter settings,” added Sun Cup Challenge and Redstone Energy Group co-founder, Rick Skelton.

Retired Army Three Star General James Pillsbury, CEO of Redstone Energy Group and former Deputy Commanding General of the U.S. Army Materiel Command, underscored the importance of this initiative to America’s energy security and noted that the U.S. military is already testing EVPV buggy technology in the field. “As these technologies take off in the military and the civil sectors it will help create home-grown jobs and enhance U.S. economic growth,” he said.

Cole Walker, co-founder of Redstone, reminded the audience that 60 minutes of sun would power the world’s energy needs for a year. “If an electric car powered by the sun can cross the 1000 mile desert it can get you to the office.” he added.

VW quit Dakar Rally Raid off-road racing and retired the Touareg. Here is the new “toy” in the VW motorsports stable: the first drivable prototype of the VW Polo R WRC. World premiere at the Frankfurt International Motor Show (IAA): Volkswagen is presenting the first drivable prototype of the Polo R WRC that will be used to launch the testing programme this year in preparation for the FIA World Rally Championship. In 2013 Volkswagen will start to contest the top rally racing category, thus setting new aims for the brand after three consecutive victories at the Dakar Rally. The new Polo was unveiled in Frankfurt on Monday evening to an audience of about 2,000 international media representatives and will be showcased on the Volkswagen stand for the duration of the motor show. “In February we started designing the vehicle concept for the Polo R WRC. Now we’re already in a position to present the first ready-to-run vehicle that will subsequently be used in extensive tests – an important step in our preparations for the WRC entry in 2013,” says Volkswagen Motorsport Director Kris Nissen.

“I’m pleased about our team having managed to get this car off the ground in such a short time. And I’m very proud about the opportunity to present it to the public on the occasion of the IAA in Frankfurt.” The Polo R WRC is based on the Volkswagen Polo that is successfully sold around the world. Its centerpiece is a 1.6-litre TSI engine that uses direct injection and turbocharging and delivers a power output of about 300 HP and maximum torque of about 350 Newton meters. The new engine regulations that came into effect in 2011 thus perfectly fit the Volkswagen philosophy of clever downsizing for high efficiency with sporty performance. Volkswagen Motorsport completes first WRC event in Finland

World Rally Championship Volkswagen Motorsport completed its first competitive test rally on its way to the 2013 FIA World Rally Championship with the Polo R WRC. Volkswagen Motorsport entered two Fabia S2000 cars from the group brand Škoda with the driver pairings Andreas Mikkelsen/Ola Floene (Norway) and Joonas Lindroos/Pasi Kilpeläinen (Finland) in the eighth of 13 WRC rounds. Unfortunately both teams failed to make the finish. A radiator damaged by a stone saw the early demise of Mikkelsen/Floene after the 17th stage.
Lindroos/Kilpeläinen retired after rolling on the eighth special stage.

Sergio Perez Motorsport F1 Guadalajara Mexico

Between 150,000 and 200,000 people lined the streets in the city center of Sergio Perez’ home town of Guadalajara and cheered the first Mexican Formula One driver in over 30 years. The 21-year old Sauber F1 Team driver went up and down the 1.5 kilometer long course on closed public roads a total of eight times in a C29, doing ‘donuts’ and getting the tires to smoke. “This was one of the best days of my life”, said Sergio Perez, trying to put his emotions into words after giving dozens of interviews and signing countless autographs, “it was a great, great experience. I have never experienced something like this before with so many people cheering me. I’m proud to be Mexican, and I’m proud to receive all this support. It is a big boost for me ahead of the new season.”

“It was an enormous event with unbelievable enthusiasm”, confirmed Team Manager Beat Zehnder. He added: “What the state of Jalisco managed to put on within a very short space of time was one of the greatest F1 road shows I have ever looked after.” In glorious sunshine with a pleasant 28 degrees the program was rounded off by a NASCAR show, which also involved Sergio’s brother Antonio Perez, bike shows and parades involving the police and vintage cars.
