Project title defense: Volkswagen will again contest the famous Dakar Rally in January. One year after the triumph of the Wolfsburg based automobile manufacturer at the debut event in Argentina and Chile – the first in the history of the legendary desert marathon by a diesel-powered automobile – Volkswagen will compete with five Race Touareg vehicles – and with a new sporting challenge: to again bring home the trophy to Wolfsburg. But what does the 32nd edition of the Dakar Rally mean for the five driver/co-driver duos in terms of the sport? What challenges are posed to the technology? And how will the complex logistics be organized?
The rally of top performances – Volkswagen is fit for the “Dakar”
Total fitness as a success factor – the Dakar Rally not only puts the participants to the test in terms of driving and navigational performance. Two crossings of the Andes at dizzying heights of up to 4,726 meters above mean sea level, unrelenting, blazing heat in the world’s most arid area, the Atacama desert, and up to 800 kilometers of daily driving in rough terrain with extreme mechanical shocks: top performances in these extreme conditions can only be delivered by those who have consistently worked on achieving the best possible physical shape throughout the year.
The drivers and co-drivers surely have to be in top form because they are not only up against their immediate rivals for stage wins and the “Dakar” title but, perhaps even more so, the rally itself. The off-road classic is the world’s toughest desert rally which takes the participants to their physical limits on its total of 14 stages. With an up to five-hour daily fitness program and altitude training the Volkswagen factory teams have perfectly prepared themselves for the title defense project in this respect as well.
